The September deadline to enter a Fantasy Football League is very important at Verona High School. The league brings a lot of people together: friends, friends of friends, and anyone interested in Fantasy Football overall.

Fantasy Football allows one person to act as the commissioner of the league, whose responsibility is to oversee transactions between players and ensure that the league is run smoothly with little problems. The players decide their trades and their lineups for games so their winning possibility can increase. This way, the competition for players also increases; they[user] search for the good players, and the ones that best fit their team and play style. Senior Chris Valentine plays in a league with fellow seniors: “Right now the league is very aggressive, the demand for certain players are high, it’s driving guys mad.”

The Fantasy Football season serves as a type of bonding for football fans everywhere. They want to brag about their wins and argue about their losses; either way, in the end, it unites them all for the love of the sport.

Junior Mike Stanisci agrees that the league is all about bringing new voices and opinions to a league each year with the hope of winning it all. “The league recently put me in a position to speak to new people as it normally does, it really helps to build very competitive friendships because everyone cares most about their record” says Mike.

Leagues can be created using Yahoo’s free service, Draft Kings, Fox, and other portals. It has transitioned into a type of online gaming, where you can join leagues without friends and challenge the best fantasy users in the nation. According to an article in the New York Post, at the beginning of this football season, nearly 75 million people will play in fantasy football leagues this season using the different portals. The most popular portal in Verona seems to be Yahoo’s service to play in one’s own custom leagues. When January hits, the winners of each and every league will be announced.

The league counts statistics and points earned by each player on a team; a team with a good number of points and an acceptable record can make the playoffs and win (depending on the league). Points are gained through successful performance by players, completed passes, touchdowns, rushing yards and more. It’s a fun social activity that keeps many guys occupied during the fall.
