Tips for Getting Motivated for School

If you’re a senior, you’re hearing back from colleges right about now. Once you’ve gotten that letter of acceptance, high school motivation kind of goes down the toilet. Or maybe you’re an underclassmen who is sick of school, in which case, you’ll probably need this more than the seniors because you still have a long way to go.

Either way, here are five ways to get motivated about school:

  • Take up meditation. You don’t have to be religious and get on the ground and cross your legs to meditate. Take some time out of the day to empty your mind and just relax. Personally, going for a run and listening to music is my meditation. By blocking-out outside noise. I am able to hear myself think and be alone. Everyone has their own way to separate from life for a while; find yours. Meditation is beneficial for increasing one’s ability to concentrate.
  • Remember school is a great social opportunity. Get involved in things that interest you, join a club or take classes that pique your personal interest. If you’re learning something you want, you’ll be more willing to go to class and do the work. Join the Environmental Club and give back to the Earth, or GLI and support women’s rights and education. If those things don’t interest you, check out the list of clubs  on our school’s webpage.  http://www.veronaschools.org/site/Default.aspx?PageType=1&SiteID=49&ChannelID=71&DirectoryType=6

There are so many clubs to get involved in.

  • Be conscious of time management as to not get too overwhelmed. It can be hard to dig your way out of the ditch of overdue assignments. Don’t get stuck in the first place; stay on top of the due dates and manage your time. Write down your assignments and plan ahead for extracurriculars that might conflict. Don’t leave projects and papers till the night before; you will regret it.
  • Eat a good breakfast. You are what you eat; if you grab a cup of coffee and leave the house, your mind will fail within the hour and you won’t be able to concentrate. Keep your mind sharp and scramble some eggs or pop a slice of multigrain bread in the toaster and you will be more alert.
  • Set goals, whether that means high honor roll or just to take something away from the class. Goals are important to feel accomplished.
