Female Athlete of the Year

On Tuesday June 7th, the Female Athlete of the Year was awarded her trophy at the Senior Sports dinner held at The Villa in Mountain Lakes. Last year’s recipient, Julia Ashley, presented the award to this year’s winner.

After four years of both varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse, Amanda Maguire was awarded the Female Athlete of the Year Award. Her freshman year and each year after she played on the varsity lacrosse team as the goalie and on the varsity soccer team as a midfielder.

Amanda Maguire recognized Julia Ashley as someone she’s looked up to since before she even got to high school. “Receiving the female athlete of the year award is such an honor, and receiving it from Julia Ashley made it an even bigger accomplishment because of all the accolades that she has received”.

Although Amanda has also received many accolades for athletics, she still looks up to the Division 1 athlete in admiration. She also praised those who have always been there to support her, saying “I’d like to thank my family and coaches throughout the years, without their love and support I wouldn’t be able to have achieved such an honor”.

Maguire was captain of both the varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse team her senior year.

Her athletic career at Verona High School started in 2012 as she was a Varsity/Junior Varsity swinger on the girls soccer team. When she did get into the game, she played midfield. That spring, she started as the varsity goalie. The freshman starter racked up a total of 107 saves in that season alone to conclude the year.

As a sophomore, Maguire started as a midfielder and contributed to a successful season for the Lady Hillbillies. In her second year of lacrosse she had a total of 201 saves and started gaining recognition from college coaches.

2014 was the start of Maguire’s junior year and after scoring three goals that season, she transitioned to lacrosse and set her personal record of 216 saves in a single season.

In her senior year she tied the year prior with three soccer goals and went on to have a total of 200 lacrosse saves.

After finishing her lax career with 724 saves, Maguire will continue her lacrosse career as a goalie as a Redhawk at Montclair State University.
