After being unusable for more than three years due to problems with stability that caused sinkholes, the VHS upper field is finally back up and running.

Sellitto Field officially closed in the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. Naturally, many townspeople and students were devastated- this was the field where hundreds would show up every Saturday in the autumn months to cheer on the VHS football team, cheerleaders, and band.  It also hosted the soccer and lacrosse teams, and was where graduation was traditionally held each June.  Without the upper field, a significant piece of traditional Verona spirit was missing.

With the passing of the 2014 referendum that generated over ten million dollars to repair all of the Verona schools, many anticipated that Sellitto field would have been fixed by 2015. However, this was not the case.

It was not until May of 2016 that the Board of Education officially decided on a plan to fully fix the upper field in time for the upcoming football season.  Construction was completed at the end of August and the the freshly turfed field was officially reopened on September 17, when Hillbilly football took on Madison- and the town couldn’t be more excited.

“It’s definitely something very special; not many seniors have gotten this opportunity. We’re actually having a great time on the field, and we’re going to make the best of it,” said senior football captain Austin Camp.
