Movie Review: Neighbors

Neighbors, projected to be one of the top comedies of the year, turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogan, it just wasn’t everything it was hyped up to be.

Quickly after Mac and Kelly Radner (Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne) move into their new home with their newborn daughter, a fraternity moves in right next door. President Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron) and Vice President Pete (Dave Franco) lead the fraternity in their journey to making history, by throwing the biggest and wildest Delta Psi Beta party of all time.

After the young couple calls the police on the frat house, the close bond between the neighbors is broken, and the war between the houses begins. The plot is all about the young couple getting even with Teddy and Pete for the pain and inconvenience they’ve caused them and their daughter.

The film was undeniably funny at times. It was a new type of role for Efron, but he and Rogan both put on exceptional performances, and were supported fairly well by Franco and Rose Byrne. It has received many good reviews, yet one word has come up in almost all of them to describe the film: “raunchy.”

Some of the comedy was just too vulgar. It might be funny to college fraternity guys who think of themselves when they watch Delta Psi Beta, but not for me. Several of the scenes seemed a little forced, like they just didn’t flow well together. It seemed as if every scene in the two and a half-minute trailer was thrown into the first 20 minutes of the movie.

The film was successful, however, in portraying the transition from college life into early adulthood. The Radners are somewhat jealous of the party-filled lifestyle Teddy and Pete live, while Teddy fears he will soon have to enter the real world, and will turn out like Mac. Overall, I’d say it’s worth seeing, but maybe not worth paying $12 a ticket for, and don’t be surprised if you’re a little let down from your expectations.
