Apple updates to iOS 8

“This update is the biggest release since the launch of the App Store.” That’s what Apple said about their new software update, iOS 8.

Every year, around October, Apple comes out with new software, always claiming that this one is even better than the last one. It has new features, a new look, and new issues. As with everything, iOS 8 has its goods and its bads.

The first major issue with iOS 8 was the amount of space it needs to download. In a 12GB iPhone, you need to have 5.4GB of open storage. Between music, pictures, apps, and messages, that was a huge problem for almost every high school student. It even turned people away in many cases. Senior Jamie Rollo states, “I didn’t update because I didn’t have enough storage and it’s way too difficult to go through deleting stuff.” That was the case for a wide range of people.

In other cases, people didn’t think it was worth it to update. “I didn’t update because I heard it took too long and wasn’t worth it,” stated senior Samantha Tusi. The part about it taking too long seems to be true.

For lucky people, the download of iOS 8 took about an hour. For the majority, it was about a three hour ordeal. For some people, it took over twelve hours. Nobody wants to wait twelve hours for their phone to update.

Whether or not it is worth it is up to you. Although not too much is different, the messages app is a huge switch. Anybody that had a group chat going on and updated their phone had to deal with many issues. Group chats did not handle the switch very well, and many people were dealing with multiple group chats because the update kept making new ones. Once people figured out how to fix their messages, they had to deal with everything else. A lot of people were upset because they thought all their pictures were deleted, but really the pictures were in a new spot waiting to be found. Other than these two things, iOS 8 was the usual update. There was nothing that special about it, but it was not a bad thing.

Because Apple controls everything about your phone, they will eventually find a way to make you download the software. Whether you choose to download it now, or wait till Apple finds a way to secretly download it to your phone, eventually you too will get to see iOS 8 in action. That is, until Apple comes out with iOS 9.
