Is PDA in the Hallway Annoying or Romantic?

The bell rings and you have three minutes to get to class. Do you rush to your next class to avoid being late?  Go find your friends in the hallway to talk and joke around?  Find your significant other to walk to class?

Or do you spend the three minutes making out with that significant other publicly in the hall in view of whomever may be passing?

We have all encountered public display of affection in some way.  Whether you saw a couple making out up against the lockers, bumped into a couple swinging their arms in the hallway, or were yourself the one involved in showing the PDA.

The majority of the spectators to PDA are highly disturbed by it occurring in the halls of the high school.  Business teacher Angela Salisbury believes that “it is gross at any age and should never be okay. Holding hands should be as far as it ever goes.”  Phys. Ed teacher Eric McElroy agrees. “It’s not the appropriate venue,” he says. “It makes me uncomfortable and it should make them feel uncomfortable too.”

“It’s immature, and it’s also kind of weird. I love my wife but I don’t need to run to her every 55 minutes so that we can publicly make out,” says English teacher Tom White.

When senior Nick Depaul sees couples all over one another he thinks to himself, “get a room.”

PDA doesn’t bother all students, staff, and teachers, though. Some teachers say it is much less apparent at VHS than it used to be. They also believe there are fewer couples now;  some recall back that in their high school years it seemed every single senior had a boyfriend or girlfriend and they were always together in the hallways.  English teacher Stacey Smith thinks kids are actually less obvious about showing their affection to one another than she recall them being in the past.

Couples should probably be more courteous and aware of the fact that the other students and teachers are trying to get from one class to another without having to find a sudden urge to vomit.

There is a time and place for affection, but school is just not that time or place.
