Simply Adorkable

Urban Dictionary defines the term adorkable as “dorky yet strangely adorable.” This word epitomizes the character of Jess on Fox’s newest hit show New Girl. The show debuted on September 20, 2011 on to 10.1 million viewers and was the network’s highest rated fall debut since The Bernie Mac Show in 2001. New Girl is currently averaging approximately 9 million viewers each week and delighting young audiences in its time slot after Glee.

The show is a hit with some VHS students as well. One senior asked about the show said “New Girl is awesome. It is so fun to watch.” Another called it “fantastic because of how delightfully peculiar” it is. “Zooey Deschanel is just perfect for that part,” raves VHS Senior Rachel Blinder about the actress that plays Jess, the show’s main character. Rachel also said of New Girl, “I just think it’s a really funny, witty show.”

New Girl tells the story of an elementary school teacher that has just suffered a bad break-up and needs a new place to live. Jess finds her new home with Winston, Nick and Schmidt, three single guys that she’s never met before. This situation brings Jess an oddly dysfunctional new family that supports her and helps her to move on.

“I looooove this show,” raves one viewer on the Entertainment Weekly website (ew.com) who apparently felt it would take five o’s, FIVE – to fully express her admiration for the show. Comments like this illustrate the devotion that New Girl has acquired in such a short time. The show has only been on for nine episodes and it has already been picked up for another fifteen.

New Girl’s eccentric central character marches to the beat of her very own, very upbeat drummer. Jess is known to make up songs and dances to illustrate what she is currently doing or what she is about to do. One of Jess’s many songs is actually the theme song for the show and shows how the show’s originality and imaginative nature. To hear this theme, click here.

New Girl is an entertaining mix of whimsy and absurdity and is the perfect way to have a little fun and unwind each week. So for anyone looking for something to brighten up their week, New Girl airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. directly after Glee.
