Lying Their Way to Top of Ratings

What is the biggest trending topic on Twitter on Monday nights from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. ? Most teenage girls are only tweeting about one thing. Pretty Little Liars.

This addictive show that manages to be a drama, mystery, and thriller all in one on ABC Family, is one of the most popular television shows for teenage girls.

The first season of this show, based on a popular book series, began with a group of five best friends. The leader of the pack, Alison, goes missing for a year and she is found dead. The remaining four girls, Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hanna, are all scarred by this event. To make it worse, the girls begin to receive text messages from an anonymous blocked number about secrets that only Alison knew about. The girls do not tell anyone about this because this anonymous texter, who calls him or herself “A”, has threatened to hurt them if they try to tell anyone about the texta. Since “A” has so much control over these four girls, “A” is able to manipulate the girls to do things that could ruin their reputation and get them in trouble. The girls have been terrified of “A” for the first two seasons and they only do what “A” asks. Who knows what will happen this season, which aired January 2, 2012.

This show is not only popular at VHS.. In 2010, it won the Teen Choice Awards for Summer TV Show, Summer Male TV Star (Ian Harding), and Summer Female TV Star (Lucy Hale). This popular show won these awards in 2011 as well, along with another Summer Female TV Star award (Troian Bellisario) and another Summer Male TV Star award (Keegan Allen). Lastly, at the recent People’s Choice Awards, Pretty Little Liars won the award for Favorite Cable TV Drama. Because this show is only getting more popular as time goes on, it is expected to win many more awards in the future.

Because this show has become more and more popular, the production company has come up with many ways to promote the show. There is an interactive game called the “Secret Keeper Game” played with iPhones. In addition, the Twitter and Facebook accounts for the show promote fun features for the fans.

Although the book series and television series differ in plot and how they display their characters, the television series has made the book series more popular. Because there are so many fans of the television series, Shepard is planning on extending the book series with hopes that more teens will become interested in reading her books.

As well as the television is doing now, the show did not start out with good reviews. Reviewers said it was a typical teen cliché that never ends.  This doesn’t seem to matter to its many fans.

“I LOVE THAT SHOW!” exclaimed Senior Cara McGinley when she heard someone mention the name of this addictive television series, “It keeps you on the edge of your seat because it messes with your mind and it is so addicting.”

Although a majority of teenage girls watch this show, there are some people that don’t watch the show that still know what is going on.

“I can tell what is happening in the show just by people’s tweets” said senior Erin Mortara.

Are you curious about the hype about the games “A” is playing with these four innocent girls? If you are, tune into the show at 8pm on Monday on ABC Family and join the majority of our high school that is obsessed with this show.
