Gatsby Goes 3-D

F. Scott Fitzgerald stressed over every description, motif and word in the four years it took to the write The Great Gatsby. To capture everything Fitzgerald expressed in the novel, Baz Luhrmann, an Australian director, plans to release it in movie form—3-D.

This will be one of the first movie dramas that will be released in 3-D. With a famous cast and a high-budget, the movie is coming out in December of 2012.

The basic plot is familiar to every VHS student who is at least a junior: Tobey Maguire plays the narrator, Nick Carraway, who lives on Long Island and befriends his next door neighbor, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Gatsby is a mystery to Nick in the beginning of the novel, and Nick finds himself unraveling the layers as the plot develops.  One of those layers is a tangled love story between Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan).

Luhrmann, in a New York Times article, said he wants to use the 3-D effect to capture the intimate moments rather than thrilling ones.  He was persuaded by James Cameron, director of Avatar, to use 3-D as an element that will help him capture the real character of Gatsby.

Although Luhrmann and Cameron think that 3-D will help capture certain aspects of the movie, others would disagree.

“I think it will ruin the movie. Gatsby was such a great book, and I think that the 3-D effect would just make it worse,” said VHS senior Cara McGinley. Sam Intili, also a VHS senior says that she hates all 3-D movies and agrees with McGinley.  Intili added that “everything these days is going to be in 3-D. We can’t really avoid it.”

Luhrmann hopes that his use of 3-D in a drama, as opposed to a film featuring its special effects, will start a new trend for movie-making.

For those who can’t wait until December,  the first trailer is available online now.
