Spotlight Players Present: 12 Angry Jurors

As the school year kicks off to a roaring start, the Spotlight Players once again are ready to unleash their brand new 2012-2013 season.

After having a successful directorial debut last year with the much talked about “Little Shop of Horrors,” Mrs. Young is thrilled to be continuing with the drama club, taking over as the brand new artistic director.

“I majored in theater,” she stated, “so I enjoyed being able to go back to my roots.” In past years, Mrs. Young declined to direct the productions due to family and school commitments. However, when last year’s production’s fate seemed in doubt, she stepped in and saved the show.

This year, the season will also be shaken up rather differently than last year. While the Fall Drama and the Spring Musical remain intact, the annual Winter Thespian production, which is student-directed, will not be done this year.

“It was a difficult decision,” Mrs. Young says, “but it was the right decision because we were facing financial problems.”

Mrs. Young says that the money usually used for the production will instead be directed towards expanding and organizing the One Acts Night, which was not performed last year due to financial issues and was instead performed at the Creative Arts Festival. One Acts Night is scheduled to be performed on May 3.

The 2012-2013 season starts off with Mrs. Young directing a classic: “Twelve Angry Jurors” which is a slight adaptation of “Twelve Angry Men” to allow females to participate in the production as well.

“It’s a fantastic play that tells an important message,” Young says, “it tells us about stereotypes and to not be prejudiced towards others without actually knowing them personally. And especially in days like today, our country needs it.”

The cast ranges from seniors to freshman, including Spotlight Players regulars as well as some fresh newcomers. The production will be performed November 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30, here in the Verona High School Auditorium.

Finally, the Spotlight Players is proud to announce the 2013 Spring Musical: “The 25th Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

After considering many other options such as “Avenue Q,” “Young Frankenstein,” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” it was decided that “Spelling Bee” was the most fun and easy to produce. Many of the members of the company also insisted on “Spelling Bee” being this year’s musical.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” will be directed by Mrs. Young, produced by Mrs. Dana Ahmuty with musical direction by Mrs. Marsha Schreier. It will be performed March 7, 8, and 9.

Come on down to the Verona High School Auditorium this year and support the VHS Spotlight Players. You can rest assured that this year will without a doubt be one to remember.
