What is Finstagram? If you have a finsta, does that make you, like, totally cool?

Actually, yes. Yes it does.

Finstagram, or finsta for short, is a mixture of ‘Fake’ and ‘Instagram’. People who have finsta’ get the account in order to post any pictures or videos they desire. The general attitude people have with Instagram is erased with finsta due to the fact that no one cares how many likes, views, or comments a finsta gets.

A finsta is usually always private, and one only lets his/her closest friends follow the account. The posts, comprising of photos and videos, are mostly funny or embarrassing. These are posts you wouldn’t want on your real Instagram, or rinsta, because they’re not ‘Killgrams,’ seriously made/good instagram photos. Some people get a finsta as a second account just to share their fun inner personalities, but others get it because they often care too much about what they post on their ‘rinsta.’  So they feel the need to have a second, less public one.

Megan Flood, also known as @doolfnagem on finsta, says “I really like finsta because I feel like I can post whatever I want, whenever I want without being judged”. Star Kent Finnegan, @ivegotthe_magick_inme, added that “It’s cool to see everyone being themselves and having fun with their friends while not caring about likes and followers. It’s a good way to willingly express yourself”.  

Urban Dictionary defines Finstagram as “A fake instagram account, so one can post ratchet pictures without persecution from sororities, jobs and society as a whole”. Finstas are not supposed to be taken seriously, and it is one of the best ways to let your true self show on social media. So, the next time you feel down or you’re just insanely bored, try making a finsta and have some fun with it. #YOLO
