VHS Students Turn to Classical Music for Studying

Every day, students are expected to study the material that they have learned throughout the course of the day. I am no exception; I study as much as I can, whenever I can. And like many people, I listen to music while I study. The music that I listen to, however, is not the same music that I would be jamming out to in the car with my friends to. I have learned through countless hours of studying and memorizing that classical music helps to focus your mind on the tasks at hand.

Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach are just a few of the most famous classical musicians. Their music is attention-grabbing and makes you motivated to study. I am not the only one who listens to classical music to focus. Senior Paola Torrisi stated “classical music is a form of relaxation to me. I am able to really relax and focus on math, Envi Sci, or anything else I am studying. If I listen to regular music that I hear on the radio, I’ll get distracted and start to sing along.”

Senior Erinn McKenna also believes that classical music allows students to learn more and focus. “There is just something about Mozart that really makes me focus,” she said. “I get better grades when I listen to classical music than when I don’t.”

Studies have shown that classical music helps to improve grades. A study at a university in France found that students who listened to classical music while studying scored significantly higher on a quiz than students who did not.

Classical music is not for everyone, however. Senior Michael Carlucci does not like the idea of classical music while studying. “I’d rather listen to classic rock,” he said. “Classical music can get kind of boring. I’d rather just sit in my room and listen to soft rock.”

Every student must find something to allow himself to be fully submerged in the information that they are expected to know. Next time you reach for those headphones to study, remember that Beethoven may help you remember what the quantum theory is.
