Grades Go Online

Did you know that by a simple click of the mouse that you will soon be able to see all your marking period grades?

Starting this year, teachers are required to keep an electronic grade book.  In the second marking period the program, called Genesis, will go “live” meaning students and teachers will be able to access grades online.

There will be “fewer surprises at the end of the marking period,” says Business and Freshman Seminar teacher Angela Salisbury about the new program.   Mrs. Salisbury also says she expects that students will be more responsible because they will have the ability to see what work they are missing and will have a truer picture of their academic standing.

“One negative is that students will want their stuff graded quicker,” comments History teacher Christopher Tamburro. ” The program may cause issues for teachers because they will have to update grades more regularly.

Some students feel that the program can benefit them. “This system will be easier because you can see grades faster,” says Senior Colleen Carr.  This allows students to always know their grades instead of keeping track of their own.

Other students think that the program can negatively affect them.  Senior Lauren Smith says that she does not like the system “because I am an overall good student, but with one bad grade my parents can find out and will be in my ear about it.” She feels that before she could hide one bad grade, whereas no her parents can see it right away.

Although there are different opinions about the Genesis online system, it will definitely be put into effect by next marking period.  The overall reaction is unknown until the new program is put to use.
