Toys Bring Nothing but Smiles

Unfortunately many students at Newark’s Hawkins Street School cannot look forward to Santa coming to their home at Christmas. However, he did come to their school.

This year, Santa (actually VHS senior Chris Ohlweiler) brought nearly 600 gifts with the help of student council members dressed as his elves.

The trip to Newark took place Tuesday December 20, with the collecting of donated toys beginning a few weeks earlier. Special Education teacher Linda Barone, who is the student council advisor, said the toy drive was one of the most successful they have had in the 15 years or so our students and staff have been doing this.

“It’s a twofold concept,” said Mrs. Barone. She explains that kids who don’t always get gifts get to experience Christmas and the VHS students become aware of the advantages they have in their lives.

“I had a lot of fun at the toy drive, giving the kids Christmas presents and seeing their facial expressions just made my day. It made me realize how blessed I am and to see these kids made me look at everything differently,” said senior Michelle Frungillo.
