Music Program Makeover

After board meetings, a letter to the superintendent, and student discussions, the choir was successful in getting some alterations in the vocal music program, including the addition of a new teacher, Mrs. Claire Ma. The program has been changing and has grown since the end of last school year.

Chorus, which is held during period zero, meets five mornings a week starting at 7:12, instead of 3 mornings a week. This change allows for more instruction time every week and keeps students constantly involved because it is every day.

In addition to more class time a new teacher, Mrs. Claire Ma has been introduced into the program. She has brought many advantages to the program including a new style of teaching and lessons during the school day. She starts off the morning with stretches and fun engaging warm ups that help everyone wake up. Many members, new and old have a very positive response to the changes. Lessons are held at the beginning of lunch or during a study and are used as a learning assessment.

“The chorus program is a lot more fun than I thought it would be, especially with jazz choir. Everyone is so welcoming and willing to work together to make great music,” said Freshman Maya Fortgang.

Although the commitment has been raised the result is so rewarding. The concert chorus sounds better than ever, and is already preparing for the winter concert and for future performances later in the year.
