On March 3, 4, and 5 at 7:30 in the VHS auditorium, something spectacular occurred. People were transported to 1928 where “the champagne flowed while the caviar chilled and all the world was a party.”

After months of practice, the VHS Spotlight players presented The Drowsy Chaperone, and it was a huge success. The stars of the show included junior Daniel Messineo who played The Man in the Chair, junior Mia Corbett who played Janet Van De Graaff, senior Arianne Valderrama who played The Drowsy Chaperone, junior Nick Kast who played Aldolpho, sophomore Owen Yarmo-Gray who played George, and junior Alana Murphy who played Mrs. Tottendale.

“No one had really heard of this play, but when it was over people wouldn’t stop talking about it. I thought it was very entertaining and I had fun watching it,” said sophomore Zoie Petronzo. The spectators poured out of the theater in masses with a smile on their faces and a little tune in their heads.

“We had one of the biggest audiences that we have had in years.” says Miranda Williams, senior and stage manager for the Spotlight Players.

Drama director and long-time VHS English teacher Frances Young plans to retire at the end of the 2016 school year. For a while, there were conjectures about the future of the theater department after she leaves.  The Spotlight Players were relieved to have found out that there is a posting for a new teacher with theater credentials required, so the department will continue to grow and shine for years beyond The Drowsy Chaperone.
