Teacher Profile: Carl Cascone

What you do know about teacher Carl Cascone is that he has a big beard, a booming laugh, and he teaches science.  What you don’t know might be several things.

When Mr. Cascone isn’t teaching he lives a very interesting life.

After graduating high school, Mr. Cascone entered the navy. For the first two years, he was stationed in Orlando, Fla. For the next two, he was stationed in Japan where he once got in trouble for shooting an emu with a water gun.

“My friend Eric and I were at the zoo in Japan and we wanted to know what would happen if you shot an emu with a Super Soaker. The next time we went, I hopped over the fence and squirted it. The emu got very mad, it screamed, apparently emus do not like Super Soakers. When it started charging me, I realized it was a bad idea.”

But shooting emus wasn’t all he did in Japan. He also pursued his passion of going to concerts when he saw Metallica there.

Mr. Cascone loves going to concerts and attended his first one when he was 11 in 1984.

A big fan of Metallica, Mr. Cascone has been to 16 Metallica shows in three different countries – Japan, Italy, and America.

Although it may seem hard to believe, Mr. Cascone also likes to watch the cartoon, Phineas and Ferb. “I think the writing of Phineas and Ferb is genius,” he says.

During his free time, Mr. Cascone participates in medieval re-enactments with the Society for Creative Anachronism. “We fight with swords made of bamboo, wear historical armor, and explore the way time would have been in that era,” Mr. Cascone said.

“That’s where I met my wife.” Mr. Cascone said. Ironically, just as he said this the Princess Leia theme played from his phone.  It was his wife calling. Mr. and Mrs. Cascone have been married for three years.

Mr. Cascone has always wanted to be a biologist, even when he was younger. “So my job is close,” said Mr. Cascone.

He says he enjoys teaching “but if I could be anything, I would want to be a general commanding a battlefield, that’d be pretty cool.”
