Teacher Profile: Dr. Smith

“Are you going to ask me about the Doc’s I wore to my wedding?” questioned Dr. Smith, who was turning out to be an easy interview because she was asking the questions. Replying yes, I found out many more awesome things about English teacher Dr. Stacey Smith.

“I wore white laced Doc Martens to my wedding. I got them straight from the factory in England. A student who sang at my wedding got them for me. Everyone loved that I wore them!”

Dr. Smith was introduced to her husband by her brother who went to the police academy with Mr. Smith. They have been married almost 15 years and have a 10 year old daughter named Delaney.

“Our first date was a Jimmy Buffett concert. That’s where we got Delaney’s name! From the song Delaney Talks to Statues,” said Dr. Smith who enjoys going to other concerts as well. “I’m a closet punk rock fan.”

Dr. Smith had been to two Warped Tours and has seen Rancid, Social Distortion, The Bouncing Souls and many more bands in concert. She actually is friends with the members of the band The Dropkick Murphys, a very popular Irish-American punk rock band. They exchange Christmas cards and when attending concerts, she is always a VIP.

“We met them 12 years ago at the Starland Ballroom. We were at the concert and they noticed my husband was wearing a Bruins jacket and they called him up on stage. After that, we became good friends with them,” said Dr. Smith.

Along with going to many concerts, Dr. Smith is a marathons runner. She has participated in races in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia.  On Saturdays and Sundays, Dr. Smith wakes up and goes running at 6:30 a.m. She also used to running during her prep period in school; however, that is not allowed anymore.

“In one year I trained for and ran in the New York marathon, finished writing and defended my dissertation, and received my doctorate,” exclaimed Dr. Smith.

To get her doctorate, she had to take nine classes. She also had to research, write, revise and defend a 200 page paper. This process took her two years.

“I initially wanted to be a sports journalist,” said Dr. Smith who went through many different interests before she decided to become a high school English teacher. Those other interests included becoming a probation officer and an elementary school teacher.

When asked what job she would want to have now if she could do anything she responded with a very unique answer.

“I’d be a cupcake-baking, marathon running, bookstore-owner.”
