Teachers Who Went Here: Mr. Powell

Most students can recognize Sebastian Powell’s distinguished laugh as he walked down the halls of VHS in 2012, but who would have thought it’s been heard here since his senior year, 1992? Mr. Powell believes he “didn’t work as hard as he should have,” but was still able to maintain a “B+, A- average.” Mr. Powell believes he learned the most from his freshman and sophomore year math classes, both taught by the recently retired Ms. Lanno. Both years he “worked very hard to get at least an average grade.”  History classes came easy to Powell, but at this point he never envisioned himself as a history teacher. He also was taught by many of the people he now calls his co-workers, such as Mrs. Young in English and Mr. Treitler in AP stats. Outside of academics, Mr. Powell played the trumpet in the marching band.

One of Mr. Powell’s favorite memories is DJ-ing at VHS. When he attended VHS, there was music playing throughout the halls during the morning. Mr. Powell formerly known as “DJ Bas Man” was the school’s DJ his senior year.

When asked about the band during his high school career, Mr. Powell chuckled, “We still had the regular Tuesday and Saturday practices, but it definitely wasn’t as much of a commitment.”

For fun, Mr. Powell and his friends would choose from the “Boring Threes,” the only three things there were to do on the weekend. They would go mini golfing, bowling or to the movies every weekend. Music-wise he enjoyed R&B and Hip Hop by the band Public Enemy. According to Mr. Powell, Julia Roberts and Patrick Swayze were very popular.

The main difference is VHS was not as littered with technology as it is now. Mr. Powell believes technology is what changed VHS the most. It is so much easier to communicate nowadays, but it’s also taking students away from learning.
