Lacrosse Program Looks to Go to Infinity and Beyond

“Coach Hill is really Buzz Lightyear in his spare time.  He even said if the team won 13 games this season, he would have dressed up as him,” joked senior co-captain Max Kellun. “Also, Coach Schiavone is a hit man at night.”

Coach Rob Hill became the new head coach of the boys lacrosse team this year, and made an immediate impact on the team, as did his varsity assistant coach John Schiavone. Kellun stated that the team was more conditioned than it had ever been in past years, and they were “more of a family.” He also added that they respected the coaches greatly, as evidenced in the team’s jokes about their secret private lives.

Ending with a winning record of 9-7, the team played many great games including the one against DePaul. This was a must win game for the team, and that they did. The final score was 10-7, and they stunned their opponent. DePaul pummeled the team in pre-season and was confident that they would succeed again.

Along with the DePaul game, Verona’s game against Newark Academy was the real turning point of the season. This broke their losing streak and saved their season. Shortly after this game, the team competed in the county tournament. They lost 7-3, but it was a close game according to Kellun, and they could have won if “they hopped on chances.”

Every year the team has had at least nine wins since the seniors have been at VHS. The current seniors were one of the first generations to start playing lacrosse in elementary school.  While football may still dominate at VHS, “lacrosse is on the rise from the depths of hell,” according to senior co-captain Chris Lapone, who pointed out that more kids tried out for lacrosse than football this year.

Unfortunately, the boys lacrosse team is losing 10 seniors which include their entire starting defense—three defense men and goalie—and their top goal scorer, Brian Marion who had 29 goals on the season.   But with the new popularity of lacrosse, they are confident they can continue to achieve success despite the loss of the seniors.
