A Season For the Books

A strong season for the VHS girls’ basketball team ended in dismay on Saturday March 2 after a home loss to Butler. Whether the numerous and unruly Butler fans had anything to do with the loss or not, the Lady Hillbillies put up a good fight, but it wasn’t enough to continue their season.

Nonetheless, their 18 win season and second place in the conference was highlighted by a season sweep of Glen Ridge, a playoff win against Pompton Lakes, the first state semi-final appearance in VHS Girls Basketball history, and of course the scoring of Amanda Langan’s 1000th point.

Langan, a four year starter, had her eye on one thousand from day one. But the historic achievement was as important to the team as it was to her. “It really kept the hype going for the long season,” said Langan. Coming halfway through the season, Langan’s basket revitalized the team and carried them far into the postseason.

In addition to making history on her own, Langan helped lead the girls to their first ever state semi-final appearance. The underclassmen recognized this and know how tough she is going to be to replace.

“We had a such a successful season, and Amanda was a big part of that,” said Claire Fitzpatrick. The sophomore guard was motivated by the great season and says she is “really excited for next season.”

Despite a disappointing loss, the VHS girls basketball team took a major step in the right direction with the 2012-2013 season. From the 1000th point of Amanda Langan, to making the furthest post-season run in school history, the VHS girls will look on this season as a major win.
