Boys Lax Team Sets Lofty Goals

The boys lacrosse team got off on the right foot with  a strong offensive performance against Boonton. The 8-6 win at Verona’s Centennial Field brought the Hillbillies their first win of the 2013 season.

“It felt great to open with a win,” said senior Anthony Codella. “We worked hard and really earned it.”

“We played well,” said head coach Rob Hill. “We had some first game jitters, but we pulled together and settled down.”

The offensive charge was led by seniors Mike Perri, Aaron Seubert, and Jed Tremble who all scored twice against Boonton’s Mark Matarazzo. Mike King put up a strong performance in goal saving 16 shots.

The team then went on to beat Nutley last Wednesday, an impressive win against Head Coach Rob Hill’s alma mater, the Nutley Raiders. One thing Coach Hill has been very impressed with thus far is the senior leaders.

“I love our senior leadership,” the second year varsity coach said.

Verona’s season last year ended with a loss in the state playoffs. Additionally, the team also lost talented players such as Dwight Tucci, Chris Lapone, Max Kellun, and Mike Theobald. Despite the losses, King, the senior captain has high hopes for the 2013 campaign.

“We are expecting to have the best season in Verona’s history thus far,” King stated. “We’re trying to bring a serious attitude and legitimize Verona Lacrosse.”  To do this, the Hillbillies have set goals of winning at least one game in both the county tournament and the state tournament.
