Despite its Youth, Tennis Team Still Finishes over .500

Even though the VHS boys tennis team had a very young team this year, they still completed the season with a 13-11 record. After losing six seniors last year, including their entire starting singles line-up, Coach Pat Schoenig had to make many adjustments to the team.

Unfortunately for the team, in January they discovered that one of their seniors and captains would not be returning due to an injury.

With all of these unfortunate circumstances, sophomore Jake Miller stepped up and led the team at first singles. With a 10-14 record, Jake had a solid season as a sophomore playing against some of the best players in the division.

Senior captain Jake Corbett played second singles, bringing his tennis experience to the team as the only returning senior. The highlight of his season was defeating Seton Hall’s second singles player. Another young player, freshman Mike Knothe played saw varsity action, starting at third singles.

The two doubles teams changed a few times throughout the season and included players Pat Cummings, Dan Li, Tyler Eagan, and Marcus McMickle. Halfway through the season, Steve McMickle returned from his injury, to finish the season off playing second singles with Dan Li.

Although the team was young and faced adversity, they came in second in the consolation tournament at counties in April. They also made it to the semis of states but lost to the number one seed, Hasbrouck Heights.

It may have not been the season Coach Schoenig, who announced her retirement as a tennis coach in May, would have liked to end her career with, but she does leave a young and experienced team to her successor, Coach Flynn who loses only three seniors next year.
