Girls Lax Takes Liberty Division Title

The Verona girls lacrosse team had another successful season this year. Led by the captains Casie Milmoe, Haley Tole, and Lynn Keating, the girls went undefeated in their division, winning the Liberty Division Title.

To achieve their final record of 10-8, the girls had to battle through a few nail biters this season. Two of the team’s greatest wins this season came against their biggest rivals, Mount St. Dominic and Montclair Kimberly Academy.  With a 14-13 win over MKA and an 18-16 win in double overtime against Mount St. Dominic, the team ended the season on a high note.

With a younger squad than previous years, the team had some concerns at the start of the season.  After losing the team’s top scorer, Julieanne Mascera, to graduation, the team was unsure of how their offense would perform this season.  It turns out they had nothing to worry about. Seniors Olivia Marino, Casie Milmoe, Lynn Keating, and Ellen Aracil all helped contribute to the team’s success on attack. Juniors Lauren Ednie and Lizzy Scandiffio, and sophomore Jackie Brozyna also brought a lot of goals for the Hillbillies.

Senior goalkeeper Olivia Pena helped to shut out opposing teams, along with the help of Amanda Maguire, a freshman goalkeeper who stepped up when Pena suffered from a leg injury midway through the season.

“It was fun being able to play with all of my friends for the last time, and it also was a great way to finish up high school sports,” shared senior Haley Tole.

“I think this season is a great example of how much you can accomplish even when expectations aren’t that high,” explained senior Lynn Keating.
