Conference Championship on the Horizon

The Verona girls’ Varsity Volleyball team could be on their way to making their mark on Verona High School history as conference champions for only the second time in school history.

The first and only conference champion win by the girls’ volleyball team was back in 2001. With a current record of 11-2 in the conference, they are only three wins away from taking the title for a second time. The girls are currently tied for first place with MKA, a team they beat earlier in the season. To date, the girls’ overall record stands at 13-6.

“We have all worked really hard this season and gave it our all, so hopefully our results show that,” said senior Eliza Sniatkowski.

Another story along the girls’ path to success this year stems from a victory against Barringer which marked a milestone for new varsity coach Jeff Steifbold.   That day, Coach Steifbold, who was formerly the girls’ varsity volleyball coach at James Caldwell High School, reached win number 500 for his career.

Senior captains Ellen DiDia, Eliza Sniatkowski, and Madison Misuro have led the girls all season, and are constantly picking up their teammates when the team suffers from a few rough patches every now and then. The girls believe in the simple motto “believe” when they are searching for some encouragement.

An annual volleyball tradition is a game against their biggest rivals, Cedar Grove, dedicated to breast cancer called, “Dig Pink.” This event always draws a large crowd and is largely anticipated by both teams.

“I like the fact that two rivals can come together and support a great cause,” said captain, Madison Misuro.

The girls anxiously anticipate their last three matches of the season with the hopes of becoming conference champions. Although the remaining opponents of the final matches are not seen as great threats to Verona, the girls are not underestimating the remaining teams.
