Spring Sports Wrapup

Girls Lacrosse– The 2014 girls lacrosse team finished with a record of 15-5. The team captains were Chloe Strippoli, Lauren Ednie, Lizzy Scandiffio, and Gabriella Mottola. They were winners of the SEC Liberty Division. This season two players achieved their 100th goal, Jackie Brozyna and Lauren Ednie. Two seniors, Lauren and Lizzy,  accepted division one scholarships. Lauren will be attending Wagner College and Lizzy will be attending Southern Connecticut State University. The team made it to the semi-final of the Essex County Tournament beating Caldwell before falling to West Essex. Sophomore goalie Amanda Maguire finished with 201 saves and is a key player in returning next season. The girls season ended in the quarterfinal Round to Villa Walsh High School.

Boys Lacrosse– The 2014 boys lacrosse team finished with a record of 3-14. The team captains were Spencer Koenig and Walt Brandt. Their wins were against Union City, Newark East Side, and West Orange. They had a lot of underclassman step up this season like Jack Farrell, Doug Spardel, and Chris Yeates. Senior Matt Thompson led the team in goals with 20 on the season. Freshman Spardel finished with the team high in points with 25. Thompson will be attending Albright College to further his lacrosse career. They were unable to make the state playoffs but hope to rebuild next year.

Baseball- The 2014 boys baseball team finished with a record of 16-7. The team captains were Matt Rubins, James Hill, Luke Weiss, and Michael Coppola. They were winners of the SEC Liberty Division. They were led by First Team All-Conference pitcher Max Vasile. They were winners of the rivalry game at Jackals’ stadium defeating Cedar Grove 7-2. Mike Cifaretto led the team with the best batting average hitting .455. Luke Weiss led the team in both home runs and runs batted in. Other key contributors to the team’s success were, Tommy DeNicola, PJ Lombardi, and Dylan Oranges. Unfortunately the boys fell short of a state title losing to Cedar Grove in the quarterfinals.

Softball– The 2014 softball team finished with a record of 13-12. The senior players on the team were Caitlin Barnes, Shelly Herman, Samantha Bass, Ellen DiDia, Natalie Wertz, and Remy Sullivan. The pitchers of the team were Sam Bass and Paige Ferrell who pitched all of the combined 167 innings. Sophomore Olivia Haveron led the team batting .395 on the season.  The team will look to improve next season under  new head coach Angela Salisbury.

Golf- The 2014 golf team finished with a team record of 9-8. The players on the team consisted of Bobby Leblein, Frank and Bill Ferrari, Ryan Lavoie, Hunter Grasso, Daniel Messineo and Mitch Garrison. The team finished with 5th Place All County Tournament, 2nd Place State Section 1 & 2 Group 1; 342 (1st place Pequannock 430) and 4th Place All Group 1. Frank Ferrari finished being First Team All-Conference and Leblein earning Second Team. Bill Ferrari was Honorable Mention for All SEC.

Spring Track

Boys The boys track team finished in 5th Place State Section and 8th Place All Group. Senior Chris Sweeney had a very successful senior campaign finishing as listed below, setting a school record in 100 meter hurdles and finishing in first place in the Group 1, North 2 state sectional in both 100 and 400.  He came in sixth place in the 400 at the Meet of Champions.

Sophomore Ryan Ramsthaler finished in 5th Place in the Group 1 North 2 State Section 1600 meters. Junior Christian Grund finished in 5th Place in Group 1 North 2 State Section for javelin. Senior Austin Williams finished in 6th Place in Group 1 North 2 State Section for javelin. He also finished in 2nd Place Group 1 North 2 State Section for 1600m Relay.

Girls – The girl’s track team was SEC Independence Division Champions this season and placed in 6th for the State Section. Some individuals highlights include Angel Barkley’s 3rd Place All Group 1 in high jump, Sarah Conboy’s 6th Place Group 1 North 2 State Section in 400 MH, Jasmine Okafor’s  5th Place Group 1 North 2 State Section in high jump, Christina Carlucci’s6th Place Group 1 North 2 State Section in javelin and 5th Place Group 1 North 2 State Section in pole vault, and Tara Hull’s 4th Place Group 1 North 2 State Section in pole vault
