Girls Basketball Recap

From the very beginning of the season, the VHS girls basketball team knew it was not going to be easy to accomplish all the goals they set for themselves, and although it didn’t end the exact way they had wished, they finished with a season they could be proud of.

Because they won their conference last year, this year they moved up to a conference with bigger and better competition. Unlike last season, their schedule allowed them no easy wins, and they would have to work very hard if they wanted to finish with a winning record.

From the beginning, head coach Jessica DelVecchio was definitely aware of the competition they would be playing, but set her sights on a great season. “I expected we would do pretty well, but didn’t know how well compared to last season (which was so successful).”

Led by senior captains Claire Fitzpatrick and Sarah O’Neill, the girls ended their season at a very respectable 13 wins and 12 losses. However of those 12 losses, more than half of them were by 10 points or less and they always gave the opposition a run for their money, no matter who it was.

One of the highlights of the season came when the team won the first game of the Essex County Tournament when they beat Milburn, making it to the actual first round of the tournament, something that no other VHS girls basketball team had done before.

Five seniors will be leaving the squad this year, but the team has a lot of young talent that will be coming up to the varsity level next year where they hope to continue improving on their level of play and record.
