Boys Soccer Recap

At the beginning of the season, the boys soccer team set a goal of winning the state tournament. Despite their hard work day in and day out, they fell short to Waldwick in the quarterfinals at home.

In conference, the boys won eight games, lost one, and tied one. Their overall final record was 15 wins, five losses, and one tie. Senior captain JP McEvoy said, “Our amazing record was no doubt our biggest accomplishment this season.”

When asked how this season compared to his three previous seasons as a player on the VHS boys soccer team, senior forward Brendan Maranz said, “This season meant so much more to me than other seasons because we had such a tight group of guys and it felt like every game we all wanted to go out there and win it for each other.” The team truly showed unity on and off the field.

For the first time ever the VHS boys soccer team had a junior captain, Robert Farley. Robert said, “Coming in as a junior captain made me nervous, but it also was positive. I felt that a junior leading, made all the seniors step up and lead too which I liked a lot. Every senior did their part which helped me, and I know they supported me which comforted me.”

In total the team had 22 players, composed of eight seniors, 11 juniors, and three sophomores. Two of the seniors were starters and the remaining six were frequently subbed in players.

When asked about what he thinks the future holds for VHS boys soccer next year, Robert Farley confidently responded, “I feel that our team next year with nine returning starters and many experienced bench players, will be able to dominate. Also the class of ‘17 is a very talented group of boys and I believe we are capable of taking on a challenge from other teams and we are hoping for the ultimate goal of playing great in the state tournament finals next year.”
