What Are VHS Teachers Listening To?

Mr. Cali:

First-year VHS physics teacher, Mr. Cali’s music interests are quite interesting and contrasting. “My two favorite genres are metal and classical,” he says. He likes bands such as Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying, but also such classical pieces Mozart’s 25th. In fact, as a guitarist himself, he hopes to one day to write a metal rendition of Mozart’s 25th.

Mr. Harris:

Most people know science teacher Mr. Harris for his expertise in the field of biology. But he is also an active music fan as well. He listens to a wide variety of different genres: hip-hop, jazz, funk/soul, alternative, reggae; at one point, he even mentioned Brazilian music. And did you know, when he isn’t Mr. Harris, he’s “Delta Rok,” the DJ. “I’ve always liked to make beats,” he says.  Some of his favorite bands include the Velvet Underground, R.E.M, Nirvana, and others. “It’s hard for me to pick out specific bands [as favorites]; I listen to a lot of everything.”

Mr. Wertz:

When he’s not teaching computer science or calculus, Mr. Wertz is listening to soul, funk, and some “oldies.”  Mr. Wertz likes artists such as D’Angelo, James Brown, Prince, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys. “D’Angelo is definitely one of my favorites; my wife and I even went to one of his concerts.” He even, at times, enjoys rap/R&B artists, such as Drake.

Mrs. Wallerstein:

“Songs shouldn’t need songwriters in the double digits; the most meaningful songs come from those [artists, bands] who write the songs themselves,” says Mrs. Wallerstein.  She, being a fan of indie rock and contemporary rock, is a fan of bands such as Spoon, The Decemberists, and what seems to be a common favorite amongst VHS teachers, R.E.M.

Dr. Meyer:

When it comes to music, Dr. Meyer prefers her music interests be similar to her field of teaching. “I generally enjoy bands/artists that have a story-telling aspect to them; a certain literary presence in their songs.” She enjoys genres such as indie, jazz, and classical, and artists such as Iron and Wine, Patti Smith, and the Ramones.

Mr. Bresnan:

Many people say music reflects the kind of person; if that’s the case, Mr. Bresnan may be one of the most intriguing people you’ll ever meet. I mean, how many people write their junior thesis on 80’s Hardcore? He is a fan of diverse genres such as classical, punk, and indie, and bands/artists like A Wilhelm Scream, Chet Baker, Pantera, Billy Joel, and the Descendants. He also likes songs with a political message in them.
