StumbleUpon This

So I’m sitting at my computer trying to write this story. I’m not even sure what exactly it’s going to be about. I have ideas about smartphones, college stuff, other generic stupid things and I’m not really sold on any of them. So as a typical high school student I begin to get distracted by the numerous things to do on my computer. I check out Twitter, do a little Facebook stalking, and scroll through a few pages of tumblr. Then I begin on the motherload of all procrastination. Stumbleupon.  I may never get back to my story.

StumpleUpon is a website created by four guys in graduate school in November 2001. In May 2007 it was bought by eBay but then bought back by its original creators in April 2009.

StumbleUpon is called by some a discovery engine. This type of search engine is very popular in the internet realm. While StumbleUpon can be used as a simple search engine where people can type in their queries and be brought to pages that fit those interests, it can be more than that.

When you create a StumbleUpon account you go through a large list of over 550 interests. You simply check off the ones that interest you and start stumbling. The interests are separated into 15 different categories ranging from Arts and History to Music and Movies. This allows users to customize their StumbleUpon account however they like. Simply hit the “Stumble!” button and you have embarked on the magical journey that the whole internet has to offer, without the effort of trying to find the perfect website.

I know this all sounds wonderful but StumbleUpon can be deadly to the easily distracted. The ease of hitting one button is kryptonite to those who are a bit on the lazy side and have a hard time staying on task. This detrimental use of the internet causes students to put off their work for hours at a time.

Procrastination is already a huge problem, one I personally suffer from, in schools around the globe. It is something everyone tells themselves they are going to overcome, but never are able to.

StumbleUpon is my procrastination nation, everyone has one. So yeah, now that I’ve addressed my problem I’m focused again. Maybe next time I’ll think of a story topic.
