The Unhealthiness of Soda and the Soda Industry’s Reply

Everyone’s favorite drink may be one of the culprits of the increase in health problems. Soda is not only addictive, but it is also unhealthy.

Soda is extremely high in sugar, which leads to many health problems down the road such as obesity, diabetes, tooth decay and cavities. I don’t know about you, but I can personally say that a glass of soda every day is not worth having diabetes when I grow older.

When you drink soda, you are sending your sugar levels through the roof, which creates chaos in your body. This threatens your homeostasis and depending on the level to which one is affected, it could threaten your survival. Homeostasis is the way a system maintains internal stability.

Now, I know many people say, “I drink diet soda so this does not affect me.” Well, to those who say this: you’re wrong. According to a study done by Harvard, diet soda can very likely to lead to cardiovascular issues.

Similarly, though diet sodas contain fewer calories, there is debate as to whether or not they are actually unhealthier than regular soda. According to Today, diet sodas contain mold inhibitors which regular sodas do not have. This chemical is so harmful that it can actually cause damage to the cells.

Overall, the moral of the story is no soda is considered to be good soda, so cut it out of your diet and switch to a healthier alternative.

Thankfully for the health of the United States, many people are listening to this advice and are cutting soda out of their diets. But, what does this mean for the future of soda companies?

According to the graph from the Beverage Marketing Companies, the sales of sodas increased, reaching their peak a little before 2007 and since then, sales have been declining. It looks like the future of soda may be in trouble.

“People want healthier products. Carbonated soft drinks have never been positioned that way. The consumer is moving gradually to a healthier place,” said Gary Hemphill, the senior vice president of Beverage Marketing Corporation.

Because of this, major soda companies Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are working to create products that are more natural, and are moving away from their namesake soda products.

“With increasing category headwinds, it’s imperative that we reinvigorate the [carbonated soft-drink] category and bring lapsed and new consumers back to the products they know and love,” said Larry Young, who is the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group CEO.

It is apparent that people are starting to realize the unhealthiness of soda. As soda companies start to produce healthier products, it is still unclear as to whether or not these new products will save the companies from destruction.
