In the second double-header of basketball action in three days in the VHS gym, both the VHS girls and boys basketball teams competed in third round matchups in the state basketball tournament Friday night, March 7.  The girls team pulled away from Saddle Brook late for a convincing 49-35 victory, while the boys team’s season ended sooner than they hoped with a 32-29 loss to Cedar Grove in a slow-paced and low-scoring affair.

With three tournament victories under their belt, the girls will play at Midland Park Tuesday night at 7 p.m.  in the North 1, Section 1 state championship.

Friday night was a sort of deja vu for VHS fans who had packed the gym two nights earlier for the first double-header of basketball action, a night that saw both the boys and girls basketball teams advance to the third round of the state tournament.

That night, in a thrilling overtime game, the girls game back late to tie their game with Emerson, and then pulled away in overtime, winning 43-35.  The boys led virtually the entire game in defeating  tenth-seeded Pompton Lakes 39-31

The double header was repeated Friday evening in front of a packed house crowd, in fact there were so many people that many were turned away at the door, and some packed up against the window of the exterior door to get a glimpse of the boys game.   The girls game against Saddle Brook was at 5 p.m. The boys game against rival Cedar Grove followed at 7 p.m.
