An Alternative to College

Global Citizen Year is a San Francisco based non-profit that recruits and trains a diverse group of American high school seniors to participate in an immersion-based international bridge year before starting college. The organization is founded on the idea that America’s next generation of leaders will require global citizenship to effectively address the problems of the 21st century.

One of those future leaders just may be VHS’s own Nic Freschi (Class of 2011) who came back to VHS in early May to give a presentation about what he did this last year.  Instead of heading off to college, Nic took a gap year so that he join Global Citizen Year, where he went to Ecuador. He lived and worked there from September to May.

Nic shared his experiences in Ecuador with all current VHS students when he spoke all day May 9 in the auditorium to physical education classes.  He explained what he did, where he was, and stressed how much fun he had. He showed pictures from his trip and videos that other people in the program had made about theirs. Global Citizen Year sends kids to three different locations, Ecuador, Brazil and Senegal.
