Tinder App Changes Online Dating

Online dating has become increasingly popular over the years, commonly among middle aged adults who are single and still searching for “the one”. But did you ever think a teenager might be looking for their match using technology, too?

Tinder is a new mobile dating application that you can access from your cellular device. It promises to help you meet nearby singles by connecting to your Facebook account. This may just sound like your typical dating site, but it is actually a whole new approach to mobile dating.

After signing up and setting your gender, location, and sexual orientation, Tinder allows its users to swipe through profile pictures of people located in a range as close by to your location as they choose.

Users may tap a green heart when they like what they see, or press a red “x” if they don’t. If a user “likes” another user who has “liked” them back, both users are notified that they have a match and now have access to a personal texting-like chat with the other, where they can each say anything they please.

So what is it that makes teenagers, kids still in high school, so interested in this dating app? “I think it’s entertaining. It’s just funny to see who liked your pictures and to be able to rate other people,” explains senior Cassidy Mckeen.

This “hot or not” aspect of Tinder’s simple and easy to manage app makes it appealing and fun to use. Teenagers often find their friends or acquaintances on Tinder, as it is now such a popular thing to use.

This dating app is not often taken too seriously by teens, but it does make it easier for you to contact someone you may have met at that party but forgot to exchange numbers with. It is generally harmless, as it is up to you who you chose to “like” and begin interaction with.

“I always find people I know on Tinder and I think it’s cool that you might get to know someone better who you’ve only met a couple times,” says seniot Joanna Grillias.

Another plus to this kind of dating app is that because it connects to your Facebook account, it can show you how many mutual friends you have with the person you are viewing. This makes it easier to stray from people whom you may feel you should avoid.

According to Justin Mateen, a founder of the application, 70 percent of Tinder users who were matched began chatting through the application. While it is unknown how many of these people are actually meeting up or potentially starting a relationship, the main purpose of the app is simply to meet and interact with people who are interested in each other at first glance.
