Google Glasses Project the Future

Ever experienced a picture-perfect moment in your life? With Google Glass, you may be able to actually capture these moments through video and photo at your very command.

Google Glass is a wearable computer with a head-mounted display that is being developed by Google. This miniature computer is built into a structure that resembles glasses that you may wear over your eyes. These glasses display information in a smartphone-like hands free format, which allows one to interact with the Internet via natural language voice commands. Using a simple voice command, Google Glass may record and store photos and videos, as well as allow you to use it as a virtual GPS guide. With the continuous development of this futuristic product there is no doubt that these glasses will have many almost unbelievable capabilities.

So how can one purchase Google Glass? At the moment, Google has only developed a sort of tester version, which they are allowing people to apply online on their website in order to receive a pair for $1,500. This is called the Explorer Edition. It is expected that a consumer version of Google Glass will be available by the end of 2013 for a significantly less cost than the Explorer Edition. Some question if it may take a longer amount of time for these glasses to really become available for consumer purchase, as they are still working to create the best product possible.

These glasses cannot be used by people who already wear prescription glasses; however Google has confirmed that Glass will eventually work with frames and lenses that match the wearer’s prescription. These glasses may even possibly be attachable to normal prescription glasses.

While the Google Glass prototype may not yet live up to one’s fashion and wearable standards, Google is considering partnerships with sunglass retailers such as Ray-Ban, and may even open up retail stores in order to allow customers to try on the device.

“I would get them, they look so cool! You don’t even have to pull out your phone or anything to search the web, it’s right there on your face,” comments VHS senior Gabby Discafani. Some people are a little more hesitant when asked if they would purchase this new kind of technology.

“I don’t know if I’d buy them, but if they become as popular as the iPhone I’d probably end up giving it a try,” explains VHS senior Joanna Grillias. Many people, especially teenagers, would likely be interested in getting a pair as long as it is the new “thing” to have.

With any new type of technology there come complications. There are some privacy concerns over the fact that people wearing this eye wear may be able to record people in public without their permission. There are also safety concerns being raised in regards to operating motor vehicles while wearing the device, as it may be considered just as distracting or more so as using a cell phone while driving.

It is up for time to tell whether Google Glass will become as popular as the iPhone. Whether it does or not, Google Glass is a huge technological advance for our society today, and may be a foretelling of what kind of advances there are to come in our generation’s future.
