Golden Globes

On Sunday January 12 the best-known names in Hollywood gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to kick off the 2014 award season. The 71st Golden globe Awards, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, honored the prominent films and television series of 2013.

American Hustle was a winner this year taking home Best Movie- Comedy or Musical, Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and Supporting Actress. Best Movie- Drama was won by Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave. Matthew McConaughey was awarded Best Actor in a Drama for his work in Dallas Buyers Club. While Leonardo Dicaprio claimed Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy in the much talked about Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street.

In the television potion, Breaking Bad took Best Drama Series, and Best Actor in a Drama Series, won by Bryan Cranston. Robin Wright achieved Best Actress in a Drama Series for her work in House of Cards. Brooklyn Nine-Nine beat out its competitors in Best Comedy Series, and Andy Samberg won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on that show. Host Amy Poehler was exhilarated over her win as Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

Critics are still unsure of how well the Golden Globes predict the Academy Awards. In some years the winners early on continue with that luck onto the Oscars, while other times the Academy has different winners. It is hard to predict who will win in March but we know who some of the top competitors are.

The night began with chaos as a sewage pipe burst flooding the red carpet. The flood was immediately cleaned just as the limousines lined up.

The always-anticipated fashion show portion of the evening did not disappoint this year, with the actresses sporting bold styles and statement colors.  Emma Watson turned heads in a Christian Dior Haute Couture dress and pants. The front was simple and tasteful and the open back showed off a tailored pair of black pants. Amy Adams and Lupita Nyong’o dazzled in red gowns by Valentino Haute Couture and Ralph Lauren Collection. Olivia Wilde dressed for two, showing off her baby bump in a green streamlined Gucci gown. Margot Robbie is a new name though her role in The Wolf of Wall Street and her beautiful red carpet look gained her more attention.

As per usual the men sported tuxedos from Burberry, Calvin Klein, and Valentino, standouts being Leonardo Dicaprio, Usher and Seth Meyers.
