VHS is Working on Getting Out the Vote

Fall is seen by many as a season of pumpkin spice lattes, apple picking, and football, but it is also election season. This year, the VHS administration seems to really be pushing students to register to vote. They put up signs, made announcements, and even made it an option for seniors to register at school. This brings up the question of whether VHS seniors will actually be voting in the upcoming election on November 6.

Senior Harrison Keating says, “I am planning to vote because it is an American right. I think that if you don’t vote, you don’t have the right to talk about the problems with the politicians currently in office.”

Fellow senior Meg Evans agrees saying, “I plan on voting because I want to express my political opinions and choose leaders that best represent me. I also think voting is an extremely important part of being a citizen. Not every country allows its citizens to vote, so I think it is important to take advantage of our right to vote.”

Even teachers are pushing seniors to register to vote. Mr. Tamburro distributed voter registration sheets to all his AP Gov students and even offered to mail the finished ones back in, for the seniors.

Many students, however, will not be 18 before the upcoming election so they cannot vote. But, there is always next November (or June 2019). It is clear that many VHS students who are eligible to vote, will be voting in this upcoming election.
