It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

One of the highlights of the holiday season is all of the festive music that constantly plays on the radio. But why listen at home or in your car if you could come and listen to great holiday music played live? The Verona High School Holiday Concert is sure to please all of your holiday music needs.

The concert is Wednesday December, 21 at 7:30 pm. You will not be disappointed.

Along with the Spring Concert and Jazz Night, the Holiday Concert is one of three big concerts that happen at VHS. This is a chance for you to come and see all of the school’s music ensembles put on a great show.

Preparation for the Holiday Concert starts as early as September for the choruses and as late as November for the concert and jazz bands. Starting from the first day of school, the chorus rehearses every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning at 7:12. This year, well known selections include Carol of the Bells and the Hallelujah Chorus.

Like the chorus, the jazz choir also starts rehearsing during the first few weeks of school on Tuesdays and Thursdays after select members of the chorus are accepted by audition. The jazz choir will be performing arrangements of Linus and Lucy and Mary Did You Know?.

On the other hand, the concert band has much less time to prepare. Preparation for the Holiday Concert begins the week after the last marching band competition in early November. Because the band only rehearses on A, B, and C, days, it is a constant rush to have everything ready for the concert. One of the highlights of the band’s performance this year will be A Christmas Festival by Leroy Anderson which is a conglomerate of Christmas songs.

Another crowd favorite at the Holiday Concert is the jazz band. This year, the Jazz Band will be performing a mix of jazz and Christmas songs including Shake Up Christmas by Train. Like the concert band, the jazz band also begins rehearsals after the marching band season ends and practices every Tuesday and Thursday night.

Besides the main groups, there will also be several small brass ensembles, a percussion ensemble, and a flute choir performing.

The Holiday Concert is an event that you must attend to complete your holiday season. The auditorium is always packed with students, families, friends, and even teachers including Mr. Burgess who sings Hallelujah with the chorus every year.
