The Future of North Korea

Now that North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong Il, is dead, what will happen to this poverty-stricken nation that Pres. Bush once termed part of the world’s “axis of evil”?

On December 17, Kim Jong Il passed away. The exact details of how the dictator died are still being withheld by the notoriously secretive North Korean government.

It seems though, that Kim Jong Il’s son, Kim Jong Un will take control of the poor country instead of his three older brothers. Their father was 70 years old.

Military leaders have already sworn their allegiance to “The Great Successor” as they are calling him. Kim Jong Un has already commissioned his first military order that all troops are to return to base until further notice. Kim Jong Il had purged any opposition for his son so that he wouldn’t face any trouble coming to power.

For those who don’t know Kim Jong Un is, he is the fourth son of Kim Jong Il. He is also only 28 years old and studied in Switzerland. He was also fascinated by the NBA and Michael Jordon.

“ It is strange that he is only 28 years old, but hopefully he will be a better leader than his father,” says senior Michelle Teixeira.

“I feel that he will be a better dictator than his father,” says senior Brandon Jimenez. It is unclear so far if Kim Jong Un will be as radical as his father. Another question is the nuclear policy of North Korea and whether they will stop producing nukes or build even more.

Another question is what will happen to the people of North Korea. The people have been starving due to the famine and the extreme level of poverty there. Human rights are also non- existent in the communist country.

Right now it is unknown what will happen, whether the new leader will be self-interested and ultra-radical as his father was, or will attempt to bring change and perhaps prosperity to this bleak country.
