After an anticipated close race, Obama won his second term as President of the United States. Obama with 303 electoral votes to Romney with 206 electoral votes makes the outcome appear as a big victory for Obama, but Americans who watched the live results will agree it was a nerve-wracking win.
Many states were too close to call within the first hours of results. Many states also flipped between the two candidates several times during the Tuesday’s long night. Florida went back and forth for almost four hours until finally around midnight Obama took the final lead with 49.9% of the votes, to Romney’s 49.3%.
Although many states like Florida and Virginia were extremely close, the candidate with the higher percentage of votes receives all electoral votes. Obama won all swing states except North Carolina by a margin of nine or less, yet received all electoral votes for those states. Many people feel the system of choosing the President is unfair, however to change the Electoral College, the Constitution would have to be changed.
Many people felt they were still unsure of the outcome at eleven o’clock Tuesday night. Romney supporters admitted to still having optimism for a win at midnight, but realized after Obama’s triumph over California the race was finished.
During Romney’s concession speech he finished by saying, “I believe in America, I believe in the people of America, and I ran for office because I’m concerned about America. This election is over, but our principles endure.”
People satisfied or dissatisfied may not agree on the outcome of the election, but everyone agrees that it was a nail-biter.
