Spurs Go Green

The NBA Finals are “going Green,” and not in an environmental awareness type of way. San Antonio Spurs sharp shooter, Danny Green, has emerged out of nowhere to power the Spurs, and if they can seal the deal, he may propel himself as the favorite candidate for Finals MVP.

Green has been putting on a shooting clinic from three-point range, currently sitting as the third leading scorer in the series behind the Miami Heat’s LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

Through the first five games, Green made almost 70 percent of his outside shots, hitting 25 of 38 shots from behind the arc, and breaking the record for most three pointers in an NBA Finals series, which is held by the Miami Heat’s Ray Allen, who did it as a member of the Celtics. The future Hall-of-famer had 22 threes through six games. Green will have seven games to extend his record far out of reach of any hopeful challenger.

“I’m not worried about catching any records. I’m worried about helping my team and playing well and helping us win a game. The numbers are things I don’t like to reflect on or look back on. I don’t want to jinx it, but at this point numbers really don’t matter,” said Green in a postgame press conference.

“Yeah, Danny has been playing great. He’s making shots,” said Green’s teammate Tony Parker. “I can’t believe he’s still open at this moment of this series… If you are going to leave Danny wide open, he’s going to make threes.”

Yet where did this guy come from?

The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted the former NCAA National Champion out of the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heel was the 46th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Since then he has been cut twice, sent down to the NBA developmental league, the D-League, and even spent time in Slovenia to play ball.

Yet Green never gave up and was finally rewarded in the offseason of 2012. The Spurs signed him to a three-year contract worth $12 million. Now, a rising star playing in the NBA Finals, he is one win away from a championship.

“Luckily, it seems everything is going right for me,” Green, said. “I’m feeling truly blessed right now. There’s got to be a Higher Power. I owe it all to God. The basketball gods are in our favor right now.”

Green and the Spurs look to seal the championship Thursday night in game seven in Miami.
