At VHS, like most high schools, there has always been a limited number of ways students, teachers, friends and family could watch their favorite Hillbillies participating in sports.   They could attend the games, or maybe look for some videos on Youtube.

But now the athletic department has come up with a new way for people to watch high school sports.

The idea of live broadcasting sports games was first introduced to Athletic Director Robert Merkler in a meeting with the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations. Mr. Merkler decided that he wanted to bring the idea to VHS, initiating a new way for parents and friends to gain access to VHS sports if they could not attend the game.

At the end of last year, he approached Broadcast Journalism teacher Taylor DeMaio and asked if she would be interested in getting students in her class involved, adding a new element to her Broadcast Journalism class.

They decided to proceed with making this idea work by contacting the Verona Foundation for Educational Excellence (VFEE) for funding for the new equipment that would be used to broadcast videos. When the grant was awarded, the idea was introduced to Ms. DeMaio’s Broadcast Journalism class, with students being allowed to volunteer to learn and be able to use the equipment.

The process is just beginning, and the seniors in the Broadcast Journalism class are excited to be the first class able to do this and to help shape how this idea goes forward, providing a valuable service for those unable to attend the games, and taking high school sports to a whole new level.
