Royal Baby Arrives; Name Follows Shortly After

It’s a girl! Great Britain welcomed the newest addition to the royal family with the birth of Charlotte Elizabeth Diana on May 2.  Princess Charlotte of Cambridge will be forth in line to the throne following her grandfather, Prince Charles of Wales, her dad, Prince William Duke of Cambridge, and older brother Prince George of Cambridge.

One of the things that kept attention on the royal family even after the birth was that when they left the hospital the name was unknown to the public. The name of the baby is not official until a meeting with the queen. The Duke and Duchess have revealed the names of their children faster than any of their ancestors. When Prince George was born, his name was announced the next day. The name of the Duke of Cambridge was not known for a week.  Of course, the name has to be of royal caliber. It is tradition for royals to get the names from ancestors. Naming the baby after certain ancestors is also significant. For instance, Prince Harry of Wales is named after Henry VIII, which caused controversy because of Henry VIII’s reputation. However, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge choose names that incorporate both sides of the family- not just the Duke’s royal side.  Charlotte is the middle of name of Kate’s sister Pippa. Elizabeth is the name of the ruling Queen of England and is also Kate’s middle name. Diana is the name of Prince William’s mother who died tragically in a car crash.

Prior to the big reveal of the name, the favorites were Victoria, Charlotte, Diana, and Alice. Of course, all these names have historical significance. With the name of the baby unknown, there was only one thing left to do- bet on the royal baby’s name. All across the world people were in pools betting on the name of the royal baby.  Beginning with the announcement that the royal couple was expecting, betting on the baby name thrived in Britain’s gambling community. William Hill, the biggest betting shop in the United Kingdom, aided in the betting, and the company announced that it would be paying out more than $1.5 million split among 5,096 individuals who picked Charlotte as the name for the new baby. However, Charlotte was the fourth most popular bet. Had the royal baby been named Alice there would have been a much larger payout. Other smaller pools were going on all around the globe. Some pools had betters guessing the first and middle name of the royal baby.

Regardless of the name of the baby, the whole world welcomed Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana with open arms. London welcomed the royal baby by lighting the Tower Bridge, the London Eye and The Golden Jubilee pink.

Even though the anticipation over the baby’s birth and naming have ended, the craziness isn’t over.  Charlotte already has her own line of memorabilia, and guessing has already begun about the couple’s potential third child.
