Jenner Brings National Attention to Transgender People

When you hear the name Bruce Jenner, depending on your age you either think of the handsome, well-rounded Olympic gold medalist, or the famous Kardashian family father, whose life is displayed to the world through their reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

But for 65 years, this famous American icon has kept a secret from the world.

As Bruce separated from his third wife, Kris Jenner, he decided that he needed to stop lying to the world about who he truly is. For years there had been speculation about his sexuality, with many rumors asserting he was gays.

On April 24th, 2015, Bruce set the facts straight in a two-hour interview with Diane Sawyer.

Bruce Jenner expressed to the world that he is a transgender. Now, to many people that is confusing, but a transgender person is one whose gender identity does not correspond to that person’s biological sex assigned at birth. Bruce explained that being a transgender not change his attraction to females, it just means that he is truly a girl inside.

Bruce says that from a young age he knew he was different from most boys. Bruce discovered this when he first started to have the urge to try on his mom’s and sister’s clothes. After that first time, Bruce never stopped playing dress up with women’s clothes. Bruce currently has two closets, one for himself now, and one for when he undergoes surgery and becomes a female.

To many people it is very confusing that Bruce is just coming out now. There are allegations that it is just publicity for the reality show, but Bruce clarified to Diane Sawyer that his “brain is much more female than it is male,” and that he soon wants to be referred to as “she” because “for all intents and purposes (he is) a woman.”

When considering revealing himself, Bruce says his main concern was his family’s thoughts and the idea of letting people down. To Bruce, nothing is changing besides his looks and the fact that he can finally be comfortable in the world. He says his mind and soul will never change. When he told his kids who he truly was he told them that he would “always be there. (He’s) not going anywhere.” By Bruce saying that, it gave his family a sense of comfort and all ten kids of his are on his side.

He says that all of his past is still part of him but from this point on, Bruce will be taking on his life adventures as a woman.
