VHS Raises Awareness for Breast Cancer

Throughout October, VHS played a huge role in helping spread Breast Cancer Awareness. Among all the different fall sports, each one participated in either wearing pink apparel / accessories, and/or raising money to be donated.

Every year, the cheerleaders wear pink bows, pink shoelaces, and use pink pom-poms in the month of October. At the beginning of the month, the varsity team traveled to Bloomfield where a huge showcase competition is held. Teams from all over the area demonstrated their dance, while receiving awards from the judges. Everyone who comes and watches pays/donates to Breast Cancer.

In addition to the Bloomfield showcase, the cheerleaders hold an annual Breast Cancer showcase at our very own gym annually. Inviting all the different cheerleaders from Verona on the younger-age level teams and alumni cheerleaders, each team performs in front of family and friends. Donations are made at the door, and every year it is a huge success.

“It’s so nice to see everyone come together to try to make a difference,” said senior captain, Gabby Coppola. This year’s showcase was held on Friday October 30.

The Cross Country Track team also helped spread awareness by wearing pink shoelaces and pink apparel at their meets. They also sold t-shirts, and shoelaces; the profit went to Breast Cancer. This year, the team handed out ribbons, on which one could write in honor of someone who has or has had breast cancer, which was then hung around the entire school.

The volleyball team also participated in the cause, as they also wore pink shoelaces, and practiced in pink clothes on certain dates. Every year, they have a “Dig Pink” game against rival Cedar Grove where everyone comes out and supports their town and their entrance fee is donated. Featuring layers wearing pink, a decorated gym, and “pink” baked goods, Dig Pink is always a success and something everyone looks forward to.

Both girls and boys soccer spread awareness by wearing pink socks, pink shoelaces, and some wear pink headbands. The boys’ captains wear pink armbands. The girls team sells pink warmup shirts, the profit from which goes to Breast Cancer.

“We enjoy spreading awareness because we all realize this is a very serious sickness, and (impacts so many)” said the senior boys captain, J.P. McEvoy.

The girls tennis team held a “Servathon” Fundraiser, where they all wear pink and all the money is donated to Breast Cancer.

The Color Guard Team wore pink ribbons during competitions and at games.

Football played a role as they wear pink socks, and pink tape. They also wore pink gloves and pink spats over their cleats.

It’s great to see everyone in Verona High School participating and trying to make a change. Coming together to help spread awareness for something that affects us all really is inspiring.

“I think it’s fantastic, it shows a genuine interest, and great leadership skills,” says assistant principal Mr. Lancaster.
